Spectra is a synthetic fiber with a much higher resistance to abrasion than nylon and Dacron - you'll experience this when you try to cut a length off of the spool with a
scissors or razor blade - it is tough to cut.

And besides being totally impervious to water and oil, Spectra also has practically no stretch to it - 75% less than nylon and Dacron, providing solid, positive lever action.
